Introduction To Five Basic Elements Of Feng Shui

Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice which is based on the view that every object in our environment has a particular energy. This energy is radiated to everyone and everything near the object. Feng Shui aims at achieving a balance between the good and the bad energies present in everything.

The basic principle of feng shui is the Principle of five elements. Wood, fire, earth, metal and water are the five elements of feng shui. These elements have certain properties and they interact with one another. Harmony can be ensured in all areas of our life if we understand the characteristics of the five elements and use them in the correct way.

Wood

The first element of feng shui is wood, called as ‘mu’ in Chinese. It represents the color green and light blue. Wood is associated with season spring and direction east. It is meant for innovation and creativity. Wood has a developing energy. It also represents birth and early childhood. Wooden objects in home interiors help to promote motivation, inspiration and passion. It can be pliant and bending like willow or strong and unyielding like the oak. 

Fire

The second element is fire which is called as ‘Huo’ in Chinese. It is represented by the color red, direction south and season summer. Fire is associated with the growing years before puberty. It radiates enthusiasm and energy around the places where it is present. Fire is the component of natural leader. Though fire can warm and cheer it can also burn and destroy. It can be used in places where you need passion and energy. are must be taken not to overuse it.

Earth

Earth or ‘tu’ in Chinese is the third element of feng shui. Earth is symbolized by the color yellow. It has no season. It represents the transition period between the seasons. Earth is also representative of the early years of youth. Stability, patience and honesty are the qualities represented by this element. As it reflects Mother Nature and comfort, it can be used when we want to be relaxed. Earth is also ideal to be used with anything related to real estate.

Metal

Metal, which is called as ‘jin’ in Chinese, follows earth. It is symbolized by the color white and gold. Its direction is west. The adult years of human life is represented by metal. Metal stands for the season autumn and indicates harvest, business and success. When one wants to be successful in career, metal should be used. Metal also provides mental strength. When it is used in home it shows wealth and luxury.

Water

The last element of feng shui is water. It plays an important role compared to other elements and the name feng shui itself contains the name of water (feng shui means wind and water).Water is represented by the color black, season winter and direction north. The old age of one’s life is represented by it. Water is associated with communication, travelling, learning, art and media.

All these elements of feng shui interact with one another. Understanding the complete characteristics of these elements and using them in the appropriate places of our home will radiate positive energy and will help us to achieve success both at home and outside.
